Beautifully Black Me means that I am embracing my skin tone and loving it; the color of milk chocolat with a hint of cayenne pepper that reddens my undertones.
It means that I have never forgotten that I am a descendant of Africans and that their principles, solidity, morals and standards have been passed down to me...
Beautifully Black Me isn't just about skin tone, it is a frame of mind; rooted in pride of self, ancestors and community.
We are a community of people still recovering from some pretty devastating circumstances and whom over the centuries have survived some of the most tragic living, social and political conditions any group of human beings have had to endure.
We survived slavery and oppression. We fought for rights that some were given naturally. Yet we "moved" the civil rights movement to a level that not only achieved civil rights for us but civil rights for everyone.
We've made great strides in a country that was done with us once slavery was abolished.
We are fighters. And our brothas and sistas around the world have proven that. Even under conditions of famine, genocide, poverty and political corruption MY PEOPLE still stand strong.
We have the spirit of warriors, kings and queens....
For me, "Beautifully Black Me" in one word means RESILIENT.
Beautifully Black Me haute couture...
